D is for Dog and for Daphne

I think we are crazy and you will probably agree when you see what we have done. We brought a puppy home yesterday. Yes, a puppy. She is 11 days older than Patrick our baby. Her name is Daphne and she is a Shih Tzu - Poodle cross. She is active and fun loving as all puppies are. She is learning to be house trained and sleeps a lot. She whined a lot last night, but that is because we are kennel-training her. Some people think this is cruel, but we are of the opinion that this is better for the dog in the long run. That is her safe haven. If we ever want to travel with her, we won't have to kennel-train her then and she will feel a sense of security. If ever there is a fire, we know where she is and can get her or tell the fire dept. where to find her. Not only that, right now we are so tired that we hardly hear her (because of the baby) and she doesn't whine constantly. She is like having another baby, but we figure by the time she is through the worst of puppyhood, Patrick will be a bigger and happier baby. Not only that, she will be a long time companion of the children. After Billy our poodle had to be put down last fall, we have been talking about getting another dog. We got Billy when he was 6 and couldn't break all of his habits. We hope to instill good manners in Daphne right from the beginning. The extra work right now will be totally worth it in the long run. Who couldn't resist this face???

Art With Gramma

My mom was here for a visit from Ontario. We miss her already. During her visit the kids played a lot with her. She played hopscotch and red light - green light and lots of other fun games. By far the favourite thing to do with Gramma is to paint. She spent a few hours painting with them and this is the result:

Sacraments on Sunday

Two of our children received Sacraments this past Sunday. Maria made her First Holy Communion and our newest family member, Patrick was baptized. It was a lovely day and celebration. My mom flew in from Ontario to be here and my Aunt, Uncle and two cousins got up bright and early to make the 2 hour car ride to make it to 9:00am Mass. A number of friends also came to celebrate with us and miraculously fit into our tiny home for brunch. Here are some pictures of our day...

Chronicles of Narnia Draw at the Library

During the month of March, our local public library had a draw for a Lucy doll donated by a fellow Calgarian. She also made two library bags with a pocket for a library card for the runners-up. Of course, the kids are huge Narnia fans and promptly entered the draw. The littles (under 7) could draw a picture of Aslan and the older kids had to answer four questions about the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. The oldest didn't fill out the form I brought home for him like the other kids did. He wasn't even sure that he was going to enter the contest to win a doll. At the last minute of our last visit he asked the librarian for a pencil so he could fill out the questionaire and enter the draw. This past Friday evening, I received a phone call from the library saying that Noah had won one of the bags and that they were going to make a presentation on Saturday afternoon. Saturday afternoon, he picked up his prize and used it right away to check out a few how-to-draw books.

The lady on the left made the bag and donated the lucy doll.
